| Abstract | Presents January 2007 assessment of current condition of wooden structures at oldest standing United States station in Antarctica, constructed in 1940 for Byrd's 1939-41 United States Antarctic Service expedition. Describes effects of abiotic deterioration and biotic degradation; wind erosion and salt accumulations causing corrosion and defibration of wood; and effects of wood-destroying fungi on materials in contact with ground or in moist positions. Includes history of occupation, use and modifications; and notes on past efforts at conservation. |
