Abstract Field measurements over seven-week period in 2003-04 season show that surface velocities on major West Antarctic ice stream vary periodically by about 20% every two weeks as result of tidal forcing. Tidally induced motion on ice streams has previously been thought to be limited to diurnal or even shorter-term variation. Results indicate potential pitfalls of using repeated velocity measurements over intervals of days to infer long-term change and for estimating potential contribution of Antarctic ice sheet to global sea-level change (mod. journ. abst.)
