Abstract A popular subject of research at present is the study of changes in the elevation and mass balance of the polar ice sheets by satellite altimetry. This paper first introduces the ICESat mission, including system construction, basic principles, data, etc. Then, combined with the topics and specific missions of polar research, it summarizes the advantages of satellite laser altimetry in studying ice changes. This is a preparation for the further study of changes in the polar ice sheets using data from multiple satellites.
