| Abstract | Plenary report of annual meeting of Scientific Committee of International Whaling Commission held from May 31 to June 12 in Funchal, Madeira, 2009. Topics include revised management procedures for western North Pacific Bryde's whales, North Atlantic fin whales, and common minke whales in North Atlantic and North Pacific; estimation of bycatch and other human-induced mortality; aboriginal subsistence whaling; stocks of Antarctic minke whales and western North Pacific common minke whales, Southern Hemisphere humpback, blue and right whales, and western North Pacific grey whales; issues relating to stock definition; environmental concerns such as climate change, pollution and diseases; ecosystem modelling; DNA testing; review of activities under scientific permits for Japan's JARPA II on Antarctic minke and fin whales and JARPN II on North Pacific common minke, Bryde's, sei and sperm whales, and Iceland's scientific permit for North Atlantic common minke whales; work of Southern Ocean Research Partnership (SORP) non-lethal whale research consortium; and discussions on future of International Whaling Commission. |
