| Abstract | Overview of measures taken in waters around French sub-Antarctic islands in Indian sector of Southern Ocean to reduce bycatch of seabirds during longline fishing operations. Regulations include ban on daylight setting of long line; use of bird scaring devices; no throwing fish offal overboard during line setting; and threats to withdraw licences from boats with excessive sea bird bycatch. Includes comments on bycatch of seabirds from illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing activities. |
